I’ve spent more than a decade teaching marketers how to be publishers. As one of the founders of the content marketing movement, I founded CMI after co-writing THE handbook on content marketing, Get Content, Get Customers. Other books include Content, Inc. and Epic Content Marketing, named one of “Five Must Read Business Books of 2013” by Fortune Magazine. I travel around the world talking to businesses, in keynotes and workshops, about the need to create valuable media channels, leveraging print, online, in-person and social media platforms in the process.

I have had the pleasure of being with CMI since its inception in 2007. I oversee day-to-day operations and have a pretty easy job simply because of the outstanding talent of the rest of the folks listed on this page. I love getting feedback and learning what works and what doesn’t in this ever-changing industry, so feel free to contact me anytime. When UBM acquired CMI in June 2016, I became the General Manager. As a long-time consumer of CMI content and a multi-year attendee of Content Marketing World, I was thrilled to welcome this amazing and talented team to the UBM family. Previously, I served as VP of Content Marketing for UBM’s technology portfolio, providing strategic guidance on content development, content optimization, audience engagement, and go-to-market platforms for our technology clients. I’ve worked for UBM for more than two decades, helping shape new multimedia content and event offerings. I also served as Editor in Chief of InformationWeek for many years. I live in the Washington, DC area with my husband, two teenage daughters, and many pets.
As the Chief Content Adviser for the Content Marketing Institute, I lead the client advisory, education and technology practices for the organization. We’ve helped large organizations such as Dell, UPS, AT&T, Petco, Oracle and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation develop new plans for the content marketing efforts.
My book with Joe Pulizzi, Managing Content Marketing, is recognized as the “owner’s manual” for deploying a content marketing process. My second book Experiences: The Seventh Era of Marketing with co-author Carla Johnson was recently released.
Vice President of Sales
I am Vice President & Publisher, overseeing sales revenue and partnerships that cover a bevy of CMI properties including Chief Content Officer magazine, Content Marketing Institute online and in-person events (like Content Marketing World, Intelligent Content Conference and Content Marketing Master Classes).
With more than 13 years of media experience, I had previously spent 5 years at Crain Communications, most recently as Senior Account Executive at BtoB magazine/online. My role at CMI is to forge strategic media partnerships and oversee all brand revenue in an effort to better serve both our ever-expanding audience and sponsor partners.
Creative media strategy is my specialty, and I am always available to discuss exciting ways to reach our audience that really hit the mark.
Senior Editorial Director
I am the Senior Editorial Director at Content Marketing Institute. As one of the first employees of CMI, I have had hands-on experience with almost all aspects of our editorial including the daily blog and annual research — and have loved every minute of it. I now oversee the editorial strategy and work with a fabulous team.
My passion is providing practical and approachable advice to content marketers while helping them create the life they want to have. I have published hundreds of articles on the topic and love sharing ideas and helping content marketers.
Senior Marketing Director
As CMI’s Senior Marketing Director, I oversee all marketing efforts for CMI, our events, magazine, research, CMI University and all other CMI properties and happenings. My goal is to grow our CMI community and audience online and offline. I want to make sure that each person that learns about CMI knows all of our offerings and knows that we ultimately want to help advance each of our community members’ content marketing efforts. Additionally, I want to have as many people in our community as possible at our in-person events year after year, by making sure we give them an epic experience so that they’ll want to return.
Pre-CMI, I have 20+ years in marketing, including agency life, B2C, national restaurant and nonprofit marketing, and my own marketing consulting business. I’m currently also a board member for The Orange Effect Foundation.
I oversee all of the creative and art direction of all CMI/CMW projects. I have worked as an art director for 18 years both in advertising and the publishing industry. My role as creative director is truly an exciting (and fun) one. To be a part of great CMI/CMW initiatives from the earliest ideation to their final release is something very special. I am very fortunate to have such a great team to work with that has a keen sense of creative vision and allows me to lead the charge.
Director of Editorial Content and Curation
I play a somewhat hybrid role at CMI — I’m part mad-strategist, part creative explorer, and fully dedicated to producing the high-quality content our audience needs to achieve greater success with content marketing. The diversity of this position means I get to tackle a wide range of projects — from building new content initiatives, to writing original content, to extending the value of our existing content assets through content curation.
I’ve been producing and managing content programs for media brands, publishers, and agencies alike for more than a decade. Through my independent content consulting practice, I continue to advise these businesses on the most effective techniques and operational processes for successful brand storytelling.
I develop the editorial strategy and run the day-to-day editing for Chief Content Officer magazine, a bimonthly print magazine for executive marketers owned by CMI. I also manage a tiny content marketing shop in Boston called SoloPortfolio. We provide professional service firms with C-level content—from sophisticated research reports to visually rich eBooks, and everything in between.
Lisa Murton Beets
I’ve held various roles with CMI since its inception. In my current role, I oversee all aspects of our annual content marketing survey, as well as the reports we publish based on the findings. I also work with CMI’s consulting/advising and sales teams to develop and report on custom research surveys. I coordinate with our executive, editorial, design, and marketing teams to extract and disseminate insights from our research. Prior to CMI, I was a B2B journalist, managing editor, nonprofit communicator, small business owner, and editorial director/consultant for a wide range of custom publishing projects.
Sr. Blog and Community Manager
I manage the editorial process, calendar and contributors for the CMI blog. I feel so fortunate to work with our fabulous contributors, both inside and outside of CMI. I am passionate about providing the best possible experience for our writers as you are key to making CMI a success. I love hearing from current and potential writers as well as our readers. I bring over 20 years of marketing experience to this position and consider myself to be “hybrid marketer” who has a diverse range of knowledge in marketing communications, creative services project management, social media, and brand strategy and development. Besides working for CMI, I am also the founder of a freelance marketing business called BrandLove that specializes in personal brand development for executives and marketing consulting for entrepreneurs, B2B’s, and B2C’s.
Public Relations & Media Manager
I primarily oversee all the PR and publicity for CMI and all of our brands. I also manage all of our video projects and in 2015 produced our award-winning documentary, “The Story of Content.” On top of that, I help out with strategic media partnerships for our events.

As Strategic Account Manager, I am passionate about helping advertisers connect with the right audience (and in the right channels) to help them exceed their goals. My focus is on building strong, long-term relationships that bring value to the CMI ever-growing galaxy of brand content marketers and practitioners.

Strategic Account Manager
As one of CMI’s Strategic Account Managers, my top priority is helping our partners engage their customers and grow their business by leveraging the wealth of some of CMI’s newest offerings – such as Intelligent Content Conference (ICC), Content Marketing Master Class series, and Content Marketing University.
Prior to joining the CMI team, I launched my career at American Business Media, a global B-to-B Media Association where I spent 5+ years heavily involved with client relationships, marketing, and membership offerings. From there I ventured to spearhead business development and marketing initiatives for an enterprise game-based learning SaaS start-up.
I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with such a great team and apply my experience to helping CMI’s partners accomplish their goals!
I oversee the production of Chief Content Officer magazine, as well as CMI’s webinar and sponsored e-mail programs. I am the owner of Execution Matters, a firm specializing in project management for publishers and content marketers. With more than two decades of experience, I assist clients with their A-Z project management needs in print and online. As the former Associate Director at Penton Custom Media, I have helped companies launch and maintain content marketing programs across the country, in a variety of industries.
I am “Girl Friday” for the Content Marketing Institute, and all related CMI properties. In other words, you need a project done, I am your girl! My main responsibility is to facilitate all projects in regards to our websites and E-media, including our ebooks, whitepapers and other educational resources. I also oversee all online sponsor programs including CMI’s Benefactors, digital advertising and syndicated content programs.
Before CMI, I worked for a trade show display manufacturer as a lead system and purchasing coordinator.
Program Manager, Content Marketing Awards
As program manager of the Content Marketing Awards, I oversee the recruitment, application and selection process for the international awards program. I also have the great pleasure of planning and executing all award-related activities at Content Marketing World.
With a background in philanthropy, I worked several years as a nonprofit advocate, managing small and large scale fundraisers across the U.S. Most recently, I assisted with the launch of The Orange Effect Foundation, an organization I continue to support today.
Email Marketing Manager
As CMI’s Email Marketing Manager, I serve as the Administrative Manager for both our CRM and Marketing Automation Systems. I have over 10 years’ experience within the digital marketing space with my roots in project management. My role allows for me to make and influence data driven decisions by identifying changes in online and on-site behavior. There is no down-time when your the data and process liaison between sales and marketing, and I would not have it any other way.
And to be able to work with a team of experts which are as passionate in their fields as I am in mine, is truly awesome.
I lead the day-to-day execution of social media for CMI, including content creation, curation and strategy. I work to foster our awesome online community on all of our social channels. Prior to coming to CMI, I began my storytelling career in television journalism, where I oversaw newsroom staff and daily operations. Since then, I have helped execute numerous award-winning social media and media relations campaigns for a variety of clients.
WordPress Production Coordinator
I have the wonderful task of uploading the daily posts. Through the posts, I have been able to gain a tremendous amount of marketing insight. This has allowed me to fully appreciate the wonderful content that our writers provide.
Also, I have recently taken on the role of a Media Partner liaison which has been a delight as I get to connect with a bunch of wonderful people in the media world. I am looking forward to meeting them in person at Content Marketing World!

I am the Director of Online Training. In this role, I manage the business operations and marketing of CMI’s growing content marketing training program. I’m excited to help marketers accelerate and sharpen their skills in the areas of content marketing strategy, execution and measurement.
My background includes over 30 years of experience in promoting B2B brands and products for corporations, agencies and non-profits, plus a strong focus on visual thinking, innovation and creative problem solving. I enjoy helping companies tell their stories in engaging ways that help to build trust and differentiate them from their competitors.
Marcia Riefer Johnston
Managing Editor, Content Strategy
I joined CMI January of 2015 to help build interest in this fascinating thing called intelligent content, namely, content that’s “structurally rich and semantically categorized and therefore automatically discoverable, reusable, reconfigurable, and adaptable.” That’s a mouthful! I believe that content marketers have a lot to gain by exploring this rich topic area.
I have run a technical-writing business for years. I blog about language at HowToWriteEverything.com. Of all the things I’ve written, my favorites are my two books:

My role is primarily “behind the scenes”, making sure that our IT infrastructure is running in top shape. That includes managing the servers, systems and related vendors that support all of CMI’s web properties. But what I really love is taking the brilliant concepts from other team members and turning them into something tangible on the web that benefits our visitors and fans.
I joined the CMI team in 2014, primarily behind the scenes, assisting the editorial and marketing teams with their various analytics and projects. I also get the opportunity to interact with our wonderful attendees at our events as I assist with volunteer coordination and other event-related projects.
Colleen M. Kilbane
Financial Business Manager
As Financial Business Manager, I provide support to our sales and management teams in building upon CMI’s financial efforts. My primary focus is managing the successful execution of CMI’s business invoicing, account reconciliations, product costing along with sales and financial reporting activities.
With 20 years of financial management experience, my goal is to be instrumental in the planning and strategic execution of CMI’s industry-leading products, services and events.
Along with being part of a talented CMI Team, the fun really begins for me at our events. I enjoy interacting with our CMI sponsors and attendees while enriching my newly acquired content marketing skills and knowledge.
